Discussion: Ages?

Codename: Echidna
Let's try a little discussion, shall we? ;)

Although their ages have never been stated on the show, if we go by their actors' ages as indicative of the characters', Weir and Caldwell have a significant age difference between them -- roughly fourteen or so years.

(TH was born in 1966; MP was born in 1952. As an aside, MP's real-life wife Arlene was born in 1966, too.)

Does the age difference matter? Do you, as a reader/writer/fan/hater of this pairing, think it matters? Especially in a sci-fi series? What sort of issues might it bring up if there was a relationship there? Would either of the characters have a problem with an age difference?

Other thoughts, opinions, questions, concerns are welcome!

I don't think it matters. I mean, if they were 18 and 32, then, yes, perhaps... but at 40 and 54? My inclination is to shrug it off. They're both very much adults, and if it worked for them... That said, the way in which they play their characters seems to transcend age. If that makes sense. I don't even think about how old Elizabeth is when I'm watching; certainly I'd believe her being within five years of Torri's age either way. Caldwell I can see being within 7ish years of Mitch's age -- so if you take the high Elizabeth estimate and the low Caldwell estimate, and it kinda becomes a non-issue -- especially in the sci-fi context.

And in any case, those two would have much more pressing issues than age differences, really.

Which, of course, is why I like them. :)

(And not for nothing, but Garwin Sanford? Was born in 1955. Just sayin'...)

My late father was 14 years older than my mother.

He met her when she was 18. He was in the VA hospital and so was my mom's father. He was really the only man she ever dated, and he had had MANY experiences, gone to the war, done a lot, compared to her, from a farm family of limited means in a small town.

They married when she was 21. I came along when she was 25 and he was 39.

I think at THAT age 14 years makes a big difference. That said, my parents made their marriage work really very well, and were together 48 years before he passed at age 83.

But at 54 and 40, I think the age difference is workable. They're both adults and know what they want. They have a similar maturity and outlook.

I wouldn't be surprised if Caldwell had been married - and either widowed or divorced. Maybe had had kids too, that would be possibly grown by now. The character doesn't wear a ring. And seriously, how do explain Stargate ultra-classified work to one's spouse, even with elaborate lies?

Nah, I don't think the age difference matters. As far as I'm concerned, they're both old enough and mature enough that it doesn't really matter.

That's just my humble little opinion, though. :)

I don't think their age difference matters all that much if there are strong feelings. My parents have been married for 49 years and a half and my mother is 13 years younger than my father. Still together after all these years.
